How Many Calories to Lose Weight
By Scott Brooks

One pound is equivalent to 3500 calories. If you are looking to lose weight, you will have to keep this in mind when you are making food and exercise decisions. You will need to find a way to burn 3500 calories for every pound that you want to lose. Most health professionals suggest that dieters aim to lose no more then 1-2 pounds a week. Anything more then this can be unhealthy and require that you lower your caloric intake too low which can drain your energy and cause you to burn muscle instead of fat.

There are a number of ways to burn enough calories to lose 1-2 pounds every week. It is important that you choose a combination that works best for you and that fits your lifestyle. Here are a couple of options below.

  1. Lower the amount of calories you consume by 500 (or 1000): This is the most simple and straight forward way to reduce your calories enough to lose 1-2 pounds. However, it is may be one of the most difficult ways to go about it but this depends. If your diet is poor, you may be able to get away with skipping a value meal or a bowl of ice cream and be fine. Many times, it only takes small tweaks in your diet to lose weight. Conversely, if you are already eating minimal calories, then getting rid of an extra 500-1000 can be incredibly difficult. In this case, you may want to make a trip to your doctor to see if there are some medical underlying reasons behind your inability to lose weight.

  1. Burn 500 (1000) calories through exercise: Now this approach will be difficult for most people. It takes quite a bit of exercise and effort to burn this many calories. Many people do not have an extra few hours to workout. In fact, some individuals are doing all that they can to get throughout the day with barely enough energy to go home and cook dinner for their families.

  1. Use a combination of exercise and diet: This is probably the best option of the three. By using a combination of exercise and diet, you can lose weight without starving and without spending hours at the gym working out. Instead, if you are looking to get rid of 500 calories, you could cut 250 calories (diet) and then burn 250 with exercise. This would only require you to pass on a Snicker bar and spend 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer or walking around your neighborhood. It really is not necessary to always make big sacrifices when you are trying to lose weight. Simply being a little bit more sensible and strategic will pay off big.

If you are looking to lose 2 pounds a week, you will need to burn 7000 calories a week. This may seem pretty overwhelming at first glance. However, it is doable. Depending on how you choose to go about eliminating them will determine if this will be painful or only a little uncomfortable. You have 3 primary options. You can lower your caloric intake by 1000 calories a day, exercise to burn it off or use a combination of diet and fitness.
